A journey in search of Middle-earth

"I am.... delighted that you have made the acquaintance of Switzerland, and of the very part that I once knew best and which had the deepest effect on me. The hobbit's (Bilbo's) journey from Rivendell to the other side of the Misty Mountains... is based on my adventures in 1911."

J.R.R. Tolkien

In this book, I set out in Tolkien’s footsteps into the spectacular mountain world myself in search of his sources of inspiration for Middle-earth. And the landscape, together with its stories, myths, and legends slowly revealed a vivid and mysterious world. Little by little, I felt transported to Middle-earth and started to lose myself in it. Switzerland in Tolkien's Middle-Earth

Are you looking for Middle-earth in the real world? J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth was not in New Zealand, but rather in England and Switzerland. In 1911, at the age of 19, he set out on an adventurous journey through the Bernese Oberland and Valais, heavily loaded and over many high passes. And it was this hike that will later inspire him greatly for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, for Tolkien was a true hobbit who hardly ever traveled.

Some of his sources of inspiration in Switzerland, Tolkien mentioned in his letters himself, but only some. So, on his tracks, I set out into the spectacular mountain world myself in search of his  inspirational treasures; and little by little, I became convinced that he was not only inspired by the landscape but also by the stories, myths, and legends connected with it. Slowly, a vivid and mysterious world revealed itself to me in these mountain landscapethe world of Middle-earth.

In this book I would like to take you on this journey and treasure hunt with me; and in the appendix you will find hiking suggestions so that you can explore Middle-earth in Tolkien’s footsteps yourself. You will not regret it, I think. For me, at least, writing this book changed the way I look at the Swiss mountains forever. Read more

About

Martin Monsch is a hobbit. Growing up in the gardens of Eglisau and the mountain world of Davos, he has settled down in the Lake-town of Zurich. Middle-earth seemed familiar to him from his first immersionwhich was perhaps no coincidenceand because riddles and treasures of inspiration have always magically attracted him, the project Switzerland in Tolkien’s Middle-earth was born a few winters ago.

In real life, Martin is a lawyer who has evolved into a data scientist in the last few years. Machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) are topics that particularly fascinate him. He dealt with technical innovations and automation processes during his Ph.D. at the University of Zurich and later as a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich. And he follows with fascination, but also with concern, the developments in the field of artificial intelligence.

Besides his travels to Middle-earth and his activities as a machine teacher, Martin is planning his first novel, in which he will take his readers into a world both familiar and foreign. It is a historical fiction work that could also suit the tastes of fantasy fans, nature lovers, and adventurers. But that is all he is currently revealing—or can perhaps anything be inferred from the fact that he writes about himself in the third person?—If you are interested, please let me know below.
